Products

The Product administrative section allows setting up new and existing products. Accessing this administrative section from the Products admin menu displays a list of all existing products in the system. Products can be seen in two views: by Category and through the Product list. User can toggle between the two views by clicking the button at the top of the page labeled either by Category or through Product list.

Product definition in CPQ can be done in three methods: Product Setup Wizard (PSWProduct Setup Wizard), through Manual Product Definition, or through the Simple Product Import admin section. The Product Setup Wizard offers a 7 step process to setting up a product. While it is not allowed for complex configurations, it is a good start for creating any product. The Product Setup Wizard can be accessed by clicking Add New from the Products administrative section. In addition, user can edit existing products in the wizard by clicking the pswfinal.jpg button from the Product list.

Outside of the Product Setup Wizard, user can edit and create products through Manual Product Definition method. This method allows defining a product through multiple administrative sections. While this method gives more detailed and advanced configuration options for the product, it is recommended using the Product Setup Wizard for defining the product’s initial setup and attribute layout.
Manual definition administrative area is accessible for existing products by clicking manualdeff.jpg for any product in the Product list view.

Alternatively, page access is offered through the Using Categories view. Existing product can be easily found and it is possible to add new one. Selecting a product or clicking Add New will display the Product Definition page. Using the Manual Product Definition displays the Current Product menu items. This menu allows user to access administrative areas such as Product Definition, Product Attributes, Add Product Alias, Code Matching, Attribute Dependencies, Rules, and BOM Admin. Each of these sections are described in depth in later chapters.

Products can be defined in either the PSW or in the manual definition with four different configurations: Simple, Configurable, Collection of Configurable Products, and Configurable System. Simple and Configurable apply to single products, while Collection of Configurable Products and Configurable System allow the user to configure one or more configurable and simple products simultaneously. Upon configuration one or more peer products are simultaneously added to a shopping cart. For more information on Collection of Configurable Products and Configurable System see the Modeling for Multiple Product Configurations chapter.

  • Simple | A simple product is one that may or may not have attributes assigned to it, but they cannot be configured. Because of non-existing configuration of attributes, users can add the product to their cart directly from the Product’s page. In addition to defining simple products using the PSW or Manual Product Definition, simple products can be imported from Excel. See the Simple Product Import chapter for more information.
  • Configurable | Configurable products have attributes associated with them and they need to be configured before added to the cart. This is generally the standard configuration type used in the system.
  • Collection of Configurable Products | Each included product can have its own attributes and each can be independently changed/reconfigured.
  • Configurable System | Each product may have its own attributes but added products CANNOT be independently changed/reconfigured. The entire system needs to be changed/reconfigured.

Collection of Configurable Products and Configurable System can be marked as 'Do not load referenced products in product collection

While loading the product, all related products are loaded and rules for each of them are executed. After that catalog code, price, cost, image and product name of the related product will be used as catalog code, price, cost, image and display value of the attribute value. The fact that all 'related' products have to be loaded is the reason why it takes too long to load the product in the configurator.
If the formulas for catalog code, price and cost of the related product are simple i.e. there is no need to load related product and execute rules in order to evaluate them this option can be used to increase the speed of product loading. In that case formulas for catalog code, price and cost of the related product will be used as formulas of the attribute value.
